A Retreat with Pema Chodron

Rev. Peg Morgan

August 4, 2013

This past nine months our congregation’s spiritual study group has been attending, via DVDs, a retreat with Pema Chodron, Buddhist teacher/nun of Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. Today Rev. Peg will share some of the teachings that our group has found most helpful in deepening our spiritual lives, both in our relationship with ourselves, and our relationship with others.  Today’s sermon will be one of a series of sermons based upon this Buddhist retreat and will focus on the spiritual practice of nurturing our natural goodness, starting where we are, and observing what is happening when our hearts close down.

Combating Apathy: Everything I Needed to Know about Changing the World I Learned from Superman

Marcus Green, author, speaker, and friend of our Congregation

July 21, 2013

Another high-profile “Superman” movie is due out this summer. Marcus will comment on the idea of a world not changed by an extraordinary man or woman but by ordinary men and woman with a willingness to do the extraordinary. The real life heroes we often admire, King, Tubman, Gandhi, Milk and others, possessed the same raw ingredients that all of us possess if we so choose to use them.

Under the Unitarian Universalist Umbrella

Rev. Peg Morgan and three members

July 14, 2013

Unitarian Universalism is a non-creedal faith which allows us the freedom to search for truth on many paths .Unitarian Universalists discern our own beliefs about spiritual, ethical, and theological issues under an umbrella of shared principles. We draw inspiration from Atheism, Agnosticism, Buddhism, Christianity, Humanism, Judaism, Earth Centered Spirituality, other religious or philosophical traditions, as well as from science.

This sharing service will be led by Rev. Peg Morgan, and will offer theological or spiritual perspectives of three of our members: Steve Burrows, Atheism, Cecelia Hayes, Earth Centered Spirituality, and Keo Capestany, Agnosticism.

Good News for Mothers Day

Rev. Peg Morgan

Let’s begin this Mother’s Day by hearing some feel good stories…Our disposition is largely determined by where we set our gaze. So let’s set our gaze today on good news. It’s really tempting for Unitarian Universalists to gaze at what is wrong because we want to fix it. But our strength has to begin from a foundation of joy brought about from good news stories. If you have a story for me to consider including, let me know!

Science and Spirituality

Rev. Peg Morgan

April 14, 2013

Spirituality and science only clash when religion becomes rigid and dogmatic. They do not compete, but how are they interdependent? How do we integrate the two in our lives?

Looking for a Home

Rev. David Maynard

March 17, 2013

Whether it's the core of a desire for freedom or the core of a religious faith, looking for a place to be "home" is essential. I will consider what we look for in a home. While home is certainly where the heart is, in every land and culture, home is so much more.
